(Akron, OH) –Destiny Druso, Aylena Rush and Chaudralyn Bell, seniors in Eric Mathews Akron North DECA Youth Philanthropy Group, recently announced that they have chosen to award a grant of $1500 to Junior Achievement of North Central Ohio. A check presentation is scheduled to take place at North HS 985 Gorge Blvd, Akron OH 44310 on Tuesday April 16, 2019 at 2:30 pm. JA Board Vice-Chair, Randy Wallace from Lockheed Martin, John Weil, JA Interim President and Denice Schafer, JA Chief Academic Officer will be present to accept this contribution.

These Akron Public School students, participating in a Magnified Giving Program, which started in Cincinnati, were given funds to invest in the local nonprofit community. Funds were also donated from the North High School-Based Enterprise. Magnified Giving’s mission is to educate, inspire and engage students in philanthropy, and to touch the hearts and minds of teens, lighten the concerns of others and magnify the impact of philanthropy.

Through a 6 step curriculum, students are educated on the true meaning of philanthropy and the critical needs in their community as well as the Non-profits serving those needs. Magnified Giving inspires the students by showing they can change their community through service and giving back. Students are also engaged with their passions by advocating for action to change a problem. Finally, Magnified Giving and their donors empower the students to make an educated decision regarding the agency most deserving of this treasure.

Destiny, Aylena and Chaudralyn researched Junior Achievement, met with JA staff members and visited a JA program to see a volunteer “in action” before nominating JA to receive this grant. “You have helped us learn about the many wonderful things being done by your organization” shared Destiny Druso. “We’ve learned how to review and evaluate grant applications and were challenged to make decisions among many excellent project ideas” commented Aylena Rush. “The goal of this project was to teach my students about the spirt of philanthropy through giving back to others in our community” said Eric Mathews, North High Entrepreneurship & Marketing Instructor and DECA Advisor.

“As a not-for-profit organization that exists because of the generous support of businesses, foundations and individuals in our local community we are excited to not only receive this grant but to be a part of this learning experience for the North HS students” said Denice Schafer, Chief Academic Officer for Junior Achievement of North Central Ohio. “This grant will enable us to purchase JA program materials for 15 classrooms and nearly 350 Akron Public School students this year” added Mrs. Schafer.
